Russian Facebook uses Facebook.com sourcecode?
The story of Russian Facebook (vkontakte.ru) began a year ago, when it was just a small regular Russian internet startup for students and graduates – a social network with no significant strrengthts or weaknesses.
The site began to grow and attract visitors rapidly, from time to time introducing wonderful new features: graffiti wall paintings, photo albums, video posting etc. Strange and, surely, *occasionally*, these features corresponded directly with facebook.com features, one of the most popular social network on the global market.

I think vkontake only visual clone facebook... Source code is different.
I have seen one friend using several months ago and was quite suprized to see that direct facebook clone. But no, I don't think they use same source (mayby just some of the user interface code that could have been copied from HTML/JavaScript code).
Whatever, I find it rather bad thing that there is yet another clone of popular website with "amazingly" same kind of features. Anyways, you get what you order. When something gets popular, there surely is bunch of people trying to copy working of system to make money for themselves.

I emailed the ‘creator’ of the Russian Facebook a while ago - he claims to have purchased the license, and that Facebook are aware of the website and support it!

- that awful thing should have been called "a SIMPLE Russian Social Networking web site with UI copied from Facebook", not "Russian Facebook" at all :)

I heard VKontakte was full of strong comp viruses and should be used with care - is it true?
As a vkontakt user I must say, I can't care less of it's sourse. Vk became quite big to be a legal case target, but still facebook is silent, hence I think there is kind of agreement between them.
A curious thing is that there is another clone project: FSBook.ru (sounds similar to facebook :-D). FSB is federalnaya sluzhba bezopasnosti, former KGB. At the front page FSBook says: "we don't mask with any benevolent purpose like finding classmates or social contacts. We are made by FSB to track everyone. Sign up and submit all the info of you and your friends". The funny feature is that one who fills enough his own profile, can write some interesting stuff into other's profiles (don't know how, I guess there is a section for that), like stupid things done in childhood, or more nasty stuff, that one would hide :)
i have a vkontakte profile, simply because i have lots of friends in russia and not all of them use facebook even though both sites are widely popular. when i first saw it i thought it was a direct clone of facebook but when you actually dive a bit deeper into some of its features you'll realize its a hybrid of myspace and facebook....it has a graffiti feature, it has a wall....it visually looks very similar to facebook....it also has a media player that allows you to search for or upload any song you want to listen to and add it to your page, creating a playlist of unlimited lengths....you can also find full movies and videos/tv shows on the site as well. personally i love it, i like it more than facebook OR myspace. it may look very similar to facebook but it is really very different
I made a profile on Vkontakte just to check it out. It looks like Facebook, but in terms of features and functionality it's like a Chinese copy of a Rolex.
The fact that they haven't gotten sued by Facebook yet probably means there's indeed an agreement between the two.
BTW, I'm not quite sure why one would use Vkontakte because Facebook is now available in Russian among many other languages. It's a matter of switching the language of the UI.
hey people I use Vkontakte and LOVE it. so far facebook sucks with all the changes, people are getting tired with all the applications, they are sooo annoying and Vkontakte is being simple and easy understandable.
if you are a russian or ukrainian speaker - choose Vkontakte. you'll be surprised how easy it is.

What was the last time you've been on Facebook? First of all it's just your opinion that the changes Facebook made make it suck.
Secondly, since the last time you were on it apparently, the changes made all the applications hidden in a tab, so that's not even an issue anymore.
You probably work for Vkontakte because there's no way in hell any reasonable person can claim that Vkontakte is better than Facebook. That's like saying that the Russian made Lada is better than a BMW because it's simpler.
...and by simpler I mean lacks a ton of cool features.
I'm yet to see a Russian social network that is actually well designed. Odnoklassniki, the most popular one, is absolutely horrible in terms of design and functionality. It's basically like a crude version of email with pix. No one even posts any info on their pages there. Because of the bad design users don't realize it's even possible.
This is a testament that the Russian market is open and easy to concur. There's little good competition.

but guess what? it doesn't really matter how cool one social network is and what kind of features it provides or does not - what really counts is where most of your freinds are. that's it. simple, stupid, true.
btw, there is a german clone of fb as well (studivz, you probably heard of it, for it was sueid by fb several month ago) and it really sucks: even compared to vkontakte, technologically it's years behind. but still, most people prefer it to fb. same story with odnoklassniki.

If Odnoklassniki doesn't get with the program eventually people will stop using it. That is also simple, stupid truth. If you don't evolve you die. Just ask Myspace. Myspace was the king of social networks. Nowadays I don't know anyone who's still using it. Everyone moved to Facebook.
Odnoklassniki hasn't bothered to make any improvements to their crappy site in ages. It's really sad how much it blows.
BTW, I did a little bit of research and Vkontakte does indeed have an agreement with Facebook, which is why it hasn't gotten sued.

They are different sources. Vkontakte is much more convenient since it's:
- faster (never slows down switching the pages)
- logically composed (it doesn't change the location of content every 2 months: list of friends is always on your left, wall is always on the bottom right of the front page ecc..)
- enormous amount of video and music (yes, illegal. no, I don't care. As if you were paying everytime you download the MP3 music, come on, bullshit..)
Advantages of Facebook are that:
- it's worldly more popular, so more linked to other sourses
- all my international contacts are on facebook (it basically follows the previous point, but whatever..)
- since the target is Russian- speaking, the most of stuff is in Russian (you can translate all the contain in any language, like fb, but whatever people download and write is still in Rus..)
VK is much better composed than fb, it is just..smarter. the only point of weakness, it's not internationalised. For now.. =)
